Consulting Staff & Residents
If your hostel is considering accepting dogs, there are a number of things to think about. The first thing to do is to consult with your staff and residents to find out whether they support the idea of accepting dogs.
It’s important to find out whether any staff members are afraid of dogs or allergic to dogs and to consider how you would manage that if you begin to allow dogs.
It’s a good idea to appoint one person who will be in over all charge of your hostel’s dog policy. This person should be responsible for ensuring that all staff are aware of your dog policy and the services available to dog owners, for example the Dogs Trust Hope Project Veterinary Scheme.

It’s important to also consult your other residents to find out how they feel about accepting dogs and to address any concerns they may have.
Make it clear that the new dog policy would only apply to existing dog owners to help them access accommodation with their pet. Existing residents would not be permitted to get a dog after they move into the hostel.
You should also take into account any cultural or religious beliefs and take steps to address these concerns. If necessary, you can take steps to minimise other residents’ contact with dogs in the hostel.
